The transition of eSports into the mainstream has gathered momentum after it emerged that it has a chance of featuring in a major multi-sport event in San Diego, US.

It was confirmed this (Friday) afternoon that the 2017 World Beach Games will be held in San Diego, with as many as 22 sports being contested.

Alongside the likes of triathlon, basketball, skateboarding, surfing and beach versions of football, athletics, modern pentathlon, handball, American football, jet skiing and paragliding could be eSports, due to the presence of Sony USA in the city, according to the Times of San Diego.

The inaugural edition of the event will be staged by the Association of National Olympic Committees – an influential grouping of international sports federations that also compete at the summer and winter Olympic Games.

The inclusion of eSports has not been confirmed, but if it does receive the approval of the ANOC, it will be the first time that competitive video gaming has featured alongside traditional sports at a major international multi-sport event.

The potential for eSports was illustrated starkly at EiG 2015 in Berlin earlier this month. Pinnacle Sports’ head of sportsbook Marco Blume revealed that eSports is the seventh biggest ‘sport’ for betting for his company, while ESL Chairman Jens Hilgers claimed that the accessibility and flexibility of eSports gives them the potential to overtake traditional sports as a pastime of choice for younger generations.

San Diego was chosen to host the Games of Sarasota in Florida, US as well as Dubai in the UAE, Sochi in Russia and an unnamed city in China.
