Jochen Weiner is pleased with the company's progress in Germany

Deutsche Sportwetten managing director Jochen Weiner is pleased with the early progress of the company’s Tipp3 online betting operation after almost six months of trading.

Tipp3, which was launched in April, is a joint venture between communications giant Deutsche Telekom – with whom Weiner is also vice-president of gambling and lottery - and Deutsche Sportwetten.

Weiner, who is a guest speaker at this year’s EiG event in Berlin, told that the focus on ease-of-use had proved to be a major benefit since Tipp3’s launch, but added that the company would consider further improvements to its platform.

“We are quite happy with the performance we are seeing in Germany,” said Weiner, who will present ‘Outside In: Leveraging the Reputation of your Brand to Appeal to Casual Players in a Newly Regulated Market’ at EiG in October. “The decision to keep the product easy to use and very simple turn out to be an asset.

“Nevertheless we are constantly working on the portfolio, we have just added additional live betting coverage and will continue to optimise the offering as well as the usability of our product.”

German gambling laws have been the cause of controversy in recent years, most notably as online gambling is currently deemed illegal by the federal Interstate Treaty on Gambling despite the Schleswig-Holstein state having awarded 23 six-year licenses that are only due to expire in 2018.

The European Commission (EC) expressed its concerns about Germany’s laws in July, and Weiner is concerned that uncertainty could hamper market growth.

“To unlock the full potential of the German sports betting market the industry needs the clarification in regards to regulation,” he said. “We are following the developments of the court cases very closely.”
