Maris Bonello wants other operators to follow Unibet's lead

Gaming operator Unibet has announced that it will be offering free Betfilter licences to customers experiencing gambling problems and treatment centres. Maris Bonello, Unibet's integrity analytics manager, told TotallyGaming.com that corporate responsibility is at the heart of the company's decision to offer the blocking software.

TotallyGaming.com: Why has Unibet chosen to do this?

MB: One of the biggest challenges we have is when customers would like to stop gambling and self-exclude permanently, but they can do it only individually on operators and therefore are open to the risk of relapsing with other operators.

This is because in most jurisdictions, customers cannot register on a national self-exclusion list and therefore run the risk that a customer who needs to have a break, might register on other operators.

Therefore, having software-blocking access is the best approach we can advise. Why did we choose Betfilter? Betfilter is the best anti-gambling blocking software that there is in the market, and we want to offer the best tools to our customers.

TotallyGaming.com: Who will be eligible and how can they get the licence?

MB: This will work in the following manner: when customers download Betfilter, and at the point of confirming, they will get a voucher code from Unibet which will render the software free of charge.

Anyone is eligible for this, and we will communicate this to our customers if they decide to close their account due to gambling problems.

TotallyGaming.com: What does this say about Unibet as a responsible international gambling operator?

MB: At Unibet, responsible gaming and player safety is embedded deep in everything we do. We have dedicated experts implementing best possible practices, and we are always pushing to identify new and innovative ways to help our customers.

We don’t want to just say that we are a company that believes in responsible gambling - we are a company that actually believes in it and put actions to our words. Our hope would be that others follow our initiative as having strong responsible gambling values is something that should be shared across all operators.

TotallyGaming.com: How are you helping treatment centres?

MB: We have already offered free Betfilter licenses to the Breakeven centre in the UK, and we would like more treatment centres would contact us in order to get the same opportunity. Only by working together can we really help responsible gambling.  If any treatment centre would like to have this opportunity, they should feel free to contact maris.bonello@unibet.com.
