Mike Sexton leaves WPT to focus on new partypoker role

Sexton has advised GVC Holdings' poker subsidiary since 2009

Mike Sexton said it would be unfair “to continue to work for both companies” after leaving his executive position at World Poker Tour (WPT) to focus on his new role as chairman of partypoker.

Sexton will also be giving up his long-term role as a lead commentator for the tour, which he has helped become one of the most popular on the poker circuit since its inception in 2002.

However, the new partypoker chairman is hardly stepping into the unknown, having acted as a brand ambassador and advisor for the GVC Holdings subsidiary since 2009.

GVC confirmed that Sexton will focus on developing partypoker’s product proposition, increasing the company’s marketing reach and improving its customer services. Key initiatives will also include the partypoker ‘small bankroll’ player pool and sustaining the development of its LIVE tour.

“In life and business, things change over time and things have changed for me,” said Sexton. “partypoker and the WPT have taken a fork in the road so to speak, and it wouldn’t be fair for me to continue to work for both companies. I was offered the position of becoming Chairman of partypoker and simply put, it’s an opportunity and challenge that I didn’t want to pass up.”

“Over the last few months, partypoker LIVE events have ‘wowed’ the poker world, guaranteeing a £6 million prize pool event at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham and £5 million at the Playground Poker Club in Montreal, with £1 million guaranteed to the winners – both events far surpassed the guarantees! There was a buzz at those events that I haven’t seen at a tournament in a long time.”

“As chairman, I look forward to achieving our mission statement, working with partypoker staff, working with partypoker LIVE president John Duthie and, most importantly, working with the players. I’m confident they’ll be extremely pleased with the opportunities that will be forthcoming at partypoker. I hope to see as many of them as possible on the partypoker LIVE tour.”

Totally Gaming says: It will have been hard for Sexton leave the WPT after helping to build it into one of the most powerful and recognisable brands in the industry. However, after 15 years of service he has agreed to take on a new challenge of fulfilling the mission statement at partypoker.
