Measuring success in Scandinavia

Measuring success in Scandinavia

With a population of just 21 million, Scandinavia remains at the forefront of innovation in the gaming industry – from the embodiment of forward-looking regulation to nurturing the latest tech-focused startups.

Moderating a lively panel at this year’s Betting on Football Conference, which took place in London earlier this month, Keith O’Loughlin, executive vice president of sportsbook for OpenBet, asked a prestigious panel of industry experts what was driving innovation in Scandinavia.

“Gambling and betting is a large part of our history,” said Jesper Kärrbrink, CEO of online casino, Mr Green. “There has always been organised gambling. It has been OK to gamble, from a state perspective. Having said that, there is a lot of room for innovation in this industry.”

Johan Styren, CEO of Swedish mobile casino group, LeoVegas, added: “Scandinavia is a success story not only from a gambling perspective, but from a technology perspective as well.

“We have really good technology education, we have invested in broadband and we have built a really good skill base over the years. This has made technology companies successful. Combined with the gambling heritage that Jesper mentioned, this has made it a perfect growing ground for these companies.”

“A lot of entrepreneurs have a hunger for success,” said Niels Erik Folmann, CEO of Danske Spil. “We, as operators, must support new technology programmes from the beginning. I am in favour of nursing and protecting good ideas.”

Totally Gaming says: Scandinavia’s relatively small size belies its strong influence across the global gaming industry. Given the region’s strong technology infrastructure and robust regulatory landscape, we will no doubt continue to witness game-changing developments in this hotbed of innovation over the coming months.
