Spanish operator one of few foreign companies to enter Portuguese market

Spanish gaming operator Luckia has been awarded online sports betting and casino licences for the Portuguese iGaming market.

The Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ) confirmed yesterday (October 22nd) that Luckia had been approved to offer sports betting and casino in the country at a meeting of its Comissão de Jogos in September.

The operator is to offer both products via its Luckia pt site, which is yet to go live.

The licences are the fourteenth and fifteenth to be awarded in Portugal, and are two of the few to be awarded to foreign operators, with commentators noting that the country’s high tax rates have proved a stumbling block.

Portugal taxes casino and poker at up to 30% of revenue, with sports betting taxed on up to 16% of turnover.

This appears to have deterred many international gaming brands from entering, with The Stars Group and Betclic Everest notable exceptions.
