How do you say Smartbets in Italian? As operators increasingly look to the country for growth opportunities, Smartbets has now released an Italian version of its app.

February saw LeoVegas acquire Winga for a fee believed to be around £5.1m whilst this news shows that Smartbets is continuing its march through Europe after a German version of the app went live in December.

Henrik Lykkesteen, Chief Commercial Officer for Better Collective answered some questions for Totally Gaming. As to the potential of the Italian market and why the current interest from the world of bookmaking, he said: “After the changes to taxation on Italian sports betting in January 2016, we have seen a growing demand for Italian traffic on our Bettingexpert platforms.

“Italy has a strong list of operators with great sports betting platforms, but solid odds comparison tools for football punters has been lacking a bit behind – and we think SmartBets is the perfect solution.”

As for a wider comment on the growth of Smartbets and betting habits full stop he noted: “We’ve seen a change in user behaviour to users wanting a more personalised view based on their preferences in teams, leagues, and bet types, and Smartfacts uses machine learning to present punters with potential great bets based on sophisticated data insights based on those preferences.”

This also won’t be the last new language option we see from Smartbets this year. Lykkesteen said: “We currently have plans to expand into more European markets in the near future, having already launched a German language version late last year. Watch this space!”

Totally Gaming says: Germany and Italy aren’t enough for them and Smartbets will be expanding into new European territories ‘in the near future’. As Lykkesteen stated Italy has a strong list of operators and with the growing interest in online betting, it’s no surprise they’ve opted to expand their presence into Italy.
