GamingMalta will champion its narrative that ‘success breeds success’

GamingMalta is an independent non-profit foundation with a remit to promote Malta as a centre of excellence for the remote gaming sector worldwide.

Less than two weeks before ICE London (6-8 February), we caught up with the organisation’s Head of Operations and Business Development Ivan Filletti to discuss objectives for the event, growing daily fantasy sports (DFS) demand, and the opportunities presented by esports.

Totally Gaming: What are the primary objectives for GamingMalta at ICE 2018?

Ivan Filletti: ICE is a key platform for GamingMalta to continue championing its narrative that ‘success breeds success’, thanks to Malta’s richly networked and growing ecosystem.

Malta is increasingly one of the most advanced and respected online gaming jurisdictions in the world, as well as having the most licensed operators. We want to keep it that way and continue to narrate this success story.

This lends itself to creating new opportunities for any igaming operation for growth and innovation, complemented by a forward-looking and responsive Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) that embraces new business models.

Coupled with this, business gets done here. Malta is also the place where ingenuity and determination pay off. You come, you settle, you succeed.

Connecting with like-minded individuals is of paramount importance. So, our strong economy, full participating EU member credentials, resources, people, culture coupled with a strong presence of B2B and B2C companies will give an operator an immediate plug-in to the igaming sector.

Add to this the lifestyle on this sunny Mediterranean island, which is something special. We are increasingly told that 'we will not go back to living to nine months of darkness'.

TG: Ahead of your second trip to ICE, how has the organisation developed?

IF: We are there to engage with all the key stakeholders and ensure we connect with the different parts of the ecosystem to promote, strengthen and accelerate the growth across all gaming sectors.

Tangibly we do this by working closely with the public sector, to champion key services required by the sector, while our networking events and international roadshows serve as a platform to join the dots with the ecosystem and help to attract ‘traditional’ investors to the igaming industry.

The work doesn’t stop here; we support many initiatives on other fronts like poker and esports tournaments. We also support and promote start-up events on our international roadshows and ensure that start-up founders are given a platform to present their new business models.

Increasingly we are also adopting this strategy for the video gaming sector.

TG: In March of last year, Oulala Games was handed the first B2B skill games licence from the MGA; has this led to a significant rise in demand from DFS operators?

IF: Alongside Oulala Games, DFS organisations such as DraftKings are already operating from Malta.

Our European Fantasy Sports Summit held in Malta was our first foray in organising a large-scale sectoral specific conference which brought international speakers to one Daily Fantasy Sports summit.

This is to become staple in the global Daily Fantasy Sports international calendar and we are considering more sectoral events being organized on this front.

Promoting ‘Thought Leadership' in these areas is a strategic priority for the Foundation.

TG: What opportunities does esports offer to a fast-moving jurisdiction such as Malta?

IF: We are seeing major companies based in Malta increasingly looking at investing in this sector with also international events in the pipeline.

Esports is the biggest global spectator sport you never heard of. By 2019, esports will be a billion-dollar industry and Malta has a lot to offer in this respect.
