Shergul Arshad, founder and chief executive officer of Mondogoal, has opened up to about the global daily fantasy football company's ambitious growth plans, despite having only fully launched its service 30 weeks ago.

Having gone live in time for the Fifa World Cup last summer, Mondogoal has attracted plenty of interest from the industry, not just because it offers its paid-for and free games across multiple markets including the UK and US, but also the high profile partnerships that it has entered into since its launch. Mondogoal has already secured deals with football giants including English Premier League (EPL) champion Manchester City and Spanish Liga outfit Barcelona.

The company expanded its portfolio last month with the addition of EPL club Chelsea. As part of the deal, much like it has done with several of its other partners, Mondogoal has developed and launched a Chelsea-branded version of its fantasy sports game that can be accessed by fans around the world.

Speaking about the firm’s high level of success in such a short period of time, Arshad told that Mondogoal, which offers matchday, daily and weekly games, is now keen to achieve further growth and has developed a strategy that it will follow in order to reach certain targets.

“We were live in time for the World Cup, but for all intents and purposes, we started just 30 weeks ago,” Arshad told

“We set out to have the legal certainty to operate what we do in key markets, such as the UK and US. We wanted to secure some marquee partnerships within soccer.

“I had been the head of digital at AS Roma and had spoken at many conferences. This credibility enabled us to work with some of the top clubs in the world. Can you think of any other startup that in a matter of weeks can toss around partners such as Barcelona or Chelsea or leverage images that can include (footballers) Lionel Messi, Neymar, Steven Gerrard, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Francesco Totti and Didier Drogba? By any metric, 2014 was a success.”

Anyone in the world can sign up to play games on the Mondogoal site, which is available in Italian, English and Spanish languages, although paid-for games are only available to players in the UK, US, Canada, Ireland and Brazil, with Italy soon to follow.

With ambitious growth plans, Arshad also revealed that Mondogoal is closing in on a Series A round, during which it expects to generate additional funding.

“We need the extra funds for marketing as we are educating a market,” Arshad said. “Fans know fantasy football and know gaming but daily fantasy football for cash is a new concept.

“Our strategy will be to add features and improvements to the site and to the mobile experience while pushing deeper into marketing and educating the UK. Partnerships with large portals and media companies as well as companies in eGaming with large databases are very integral to our growth.

“We are also in the process of expanding into new markets. We are rapidly increasing while abiding strictly by local laws - something not all sites are as vigilant about.”
