Fantasfida - Why stats are crucial to the success of DFS

A new DFS operator is heading to UK shores in the form of Fantasfida. This is courtesy of Italian games studio Digital Bros which is aiming to differentiate its product by ‘offering its users access to more game information along with team and player statistics’.

Totally Gaming spoke to Tiziano Tonti, Managing Director of Game Network (a subsidiary of  Digital Bros) about these plans in detail.

As to why Fantasfida launched in the UK rather than any other country, Tonti responded: “We chose the UK, because outside of the USA, this is a marketplace that has real potential and an active audience. There are more than 6 million fantasy players, both seasonal long and daily, in the UK and we feel we can offer them a product that will add to their game-day fun and offer the chance for a social gaming experience.

“We have gained valuable experience in the Italian Marketplace and we genuinely feel we have a platform that will resonate with UK DFS players.”

The likes of homegrown entities Premier Punt, European launches such as Sportito and Oulala and of course DraftKings and FanDuel have recognised this same potential with the UK market. DraftKings and Oulala have both recently received the relatively new Maltese skilled gaming licence for DFS products and there’ll be more to follow.

Tonti said of this: “We are very excited by the Maltese skilled game license; especially as we evolve our offering into other regions. While we are regulated in both Italy and the UK by the relevant gambling bodies and are happy to do so, we do see DFS a game of controlled skill so to have this recognised by a regulator is excellent news.”

A lot of DFS products struggle to stand out from the crowd and one method by which Fantasfida is looking to not make this same mistake is with its Locker Room feature. This gives players more insight into data about teams and players; using OPTA stats it allows opponents to look at stats of each individual player, including goals, position breakdown, off target shots and matches played.

Regarding this product Tinto stated: “We are very excited about the Locker room. We have spent a lot of time developing this product. We want our DFS players to be well educated and informed when playing the game and this tool offers all that and more. The ability to see historical information for clubs, games and players with the option to compare offensive and defensive traits is very exciting and will lead to a more educated and skilled player.”

DFS is still very much a niche game in the UK and companies are investing big money into bringing it to the mainstream.  The question of how best to do this is a pivotal one. Tinto shared his thoughts: “You need to create a product that is a fun and easy to play whilst maintaining a certain skill level. From signing up to selecting and entering teams, the user experience is a key thing on the player journey and we have worked hard in that regard with the game.

“Providing stats and information is crucial, you want the players to have all the tools they need to play in one place.  Multiple tournaments is also crucial; that is why we are delighted to offer games from the Championship, Champions League, Europa League, Chinese Super League, MLS and Serie A in addition to the Premier league and International matches.”

Totally Gaming says: Fantasfida joins the crowd of new DFS operators in the UK. Its focus on providing stats in a consumable and engaging way makes sense and it should enjoy some success on the rising tide of daily fantasy sports in Europe.
