FSB's Richard Thorp on the challenges of offering mobile betting via SMS

SMS betting is a key feature in the new platform being used by Tanzania’s Mkekabet which has been developed by London-based FSB Technology. FSB’s managed service includes a proprietary live sports betting platform, real-time algorithmic pricing models and CRM tools for player segmentation and bonusing.

Based on the early success, FSB is keen to identify further opportunities in the region. Business development director Richard Thorp told TotallyGaming.com: “We have created a product that runs across multiple devices which is fully responsive for web and mobile, but we also had to create a product that works on 'feature' phones for the market.

“It created some challenges – in fact we had a lot of feature phones from years ago that are popular in Africa sent to the office so that we could test the system.”

The platform has also been integrated into Oxygen8’s mobile payment gateway making use of both M-pesa and Tigo mobile banking services. This means customers will now benefit from being able to select from a huge number of markets on sports including football, tennis, basketball, cricket, golf, volleyball, and handball. FSB is trading both pre-match and in-play and there are plans to introduce a jackpot product based on correct football scores, which will be available in multiple jurisdictions.

Thorp added: “We’re very pleased to have launched Mkekabet and are very confident it will be very beneficial to its operator in Tanzania and beyond. We were always confident that we could tailor our offering to wide range of territories, but answering language, local payment provision, and scalability questions has been very rewarding.”

Mkekabet managing director Mark Robertson added: “We’ve been very impressed with FSB’s ability to customise their platform for our local payment and regulatory requirements. Our site is now the best looking and best performing ones around and we have a distinct advantage over our competitors.”

Totally Gaming Says: The small bets, huge volume markets in Africa means that betting platforms need to be robust enough not to fail at key moments. Added to that the unfamiliar SMS as a betting platform and FSB will have learned a lot from its first foray into the market.
