The firm hopes to become the 'Bloomberg for sports fans'.

Sports data and analytics company RotoQL is looking optimistically towards the possibility of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) being repealed, after the firm secured a $3 million seed investment round.

The accumulation of funds will be used to accelerate growth of their existing business lines, which include data products aimed at the daily fantasy and season long fantasy markets. The proceeds will also go towards launching BetQL, an analytics platform for sports betting.

BetQL will focus on providing data designed to aid players in “bet discovery” - guiding them to the value on the betting board. The product will be launched against the possibility of a positive ruling in favor of New Jersey to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, or PASPA.

RotoQL CEO Justin Park told "There is obviously a lot of excitement about the potential repeal of PASPA and a new world of regulated sports betting in the US. What I think people forget is the US has a long and incredibly strong history of fantasy sports.

“The FSTA estimates over 50 million Americans engage in some sort of fantasy sports. I think the more pressing conversation in the near-term is what is the best way to introduce new sports betting offerings to this legacy user base. We believe our technology will be an important piece of this transition."

Meanwhile, Benjie Cherniak, President at Don Best, added: “RotoQL has established itself as a leader in the B2C fantasy space, as evidenced by their rapid growth and passionate user base.

“With legalised US sports wagering set to become a reality in the months ahead, RotoQL is perfectly positioned to penetrate the B2C sports betting space via their unique mobile-first offering, BetQL. This is a textbook example of the right product at the right time in the right place.”

Totally Gaming says: Fantasy sports is taking the US by storm, so much so that a recent study found it to be just as popular as American football for those aged 14 to 21. With that in mind, RotoQL could well be in line to make a big impact, and the repealing of PASPA would further reinforce this.
