Operators to tweet responsible gambling messages

Senet Group has unveiled a series of new social media rules

Major operators such as Ladbrokes, Paddy Power Betfair and William Hill must now include responsible gambling messages in their social media feeds under new enforceable rules introduced by Senet Group.

The gambling watchdog unveiled a series of guidelines today (Thursday), with its members now made to include regular stand-alone Senet Group advertisements in their Twitter feeds. Operators will also carry prominent responsible gambling messages on the homepages of their major social media sites, as well as on all other web and social applications.

Senet Group members have a combined 1.6 million followers on social media network Twitter, and Wanda Goldwag, the organisation’s chair and independent standards commissioner, said they must set the standard for the industry.

“It’s important that operators are socially responsible in the way that they promote gambling, whatever channels they use,” Goldwag said. “These new commitments are designed to uphold that principle in light of changing patterns of media usage.”

The move comes just weeks after a study by think tank Demos and the Responsible Gambling Trust (RGT) charity revealed there are some 877 Twitter accounts that endorse gambling in the UK.
