Poker and bingo both saw a decline during 2015

Italy saw huge growth in the profits of its online casino market during 2015, with online sports betting also reporting double-digit growth.

Figures from the AAMS regulator, reported by the AGIMEG gaming news website, show that the online casino segment’s profits grew by 31.2 per cent year-on-year to €327.5m (355.6m) on revenue of €9.4bn. Sports betting rose by 19 per cent to €254m on total revenue of €5.5bn, which was up 28 per cent. However, online poker cash games saw profits fall by 4.2 per cent to €71.3m based on revenue of €727m, with tournament play down 4 per cent.

Lottomatica is the market leader in Italian online casino gaming with 14.7 per cent, Sisal has 9.6 per cent and William Hill possesses 8.3 per cent. Bet365 continues to dominate in sports betting, with revenue of €

The results come at an interesting point for gambling in Italy, with taxes on betting set to be lowered to 20 per cent of gross gaming revenue and a liberalisation of the markets that operators are allowed to offer.   

The bingo sector is also set to see its tax rates lowered, but struggled in 2015 as profit fell by 7.1 per cent to €25.3m.
