Moderator George Zaloom believes the expansion of 'Game to Watch' will promote innovation

George Zaloom, moderator of the ‘Game to Watch’ competition at ICE 2016, has told entrants that the entertainment factor will be the key to their success.

The competition that celebrates great games returns bigger and better in 2016 with, for the first time, prizes to be awarded in both ‘established’ and ‘indie’ categories.

Entry is open until December 7, with a shortlist of five in each division to pitch to an expert panel of judges at the ExCel in London on Wednesday, February 3.

Zaloom, chief executive of social gaming systems developer Las Vegas Whaling Company, will lead the judges in the ‘established’ category, but said that the addition of a second award is key to the competition promoting innovation from through the gaming sector.

“We wanted to level the playing field,” he said. “In the past everyone was lumped together, so we had small start-ups competing against large studios with huge teams.

“While it was hoped there would be a David and Goliath match-up, ultimately it just wasn't happening. We're excited to see how this new match-up plays out.”

The competition, won last year by Gaming Realms for ‘Slingo Riches’, will be part of the Game Design & Development conference at ICE.

The judges in the ‘established’ category include Yariv Lavi, director of business development at 888, while independent designer Axel Gutschenreiter, who has created games for the BBC and Mind Candy, will lead the panel in the ‘indie’ category.

As well as producing a great game, Zaloom told contestants that they must wow the judges and audience with their presentation.

“A bad presenter can kill a great game, so be awesome,” he said. “You're on stage, so don't turn your back to the audience and read your PowerPoint. Speak into the microphone, not away from it. Don't mumble!

“No text-riddled 12 point PowerPoints. No one wants to read – pictures and imagery work best – and video is even better.

“You're selling entertainment – entertain us!”
