David Chang said the platform was launching first in the UK because of the primacy of its online gaming industry

Betcade, the first dedicated store for real money gaming apps on Android, is progressing towards its full launch in the UK this summer by this week officially opening for submissions from operators. spoke to the company’s chief executive David Chang about why the platform is so important for the mobile gaming industry, with the former Gamblit executive revealing Betcade’s plans for expansion and becoming a regulated payments institution… Why did you decide to launch in the UK first?

David Chang: We launched in the UK first for a number of reasons. Firstly, because it is the largest online gaming market and we feel that Android has been severely under-represented here. The UK is also appealing to us as we plan to be regulated as a payments institution and the UK FCA is seen as the ‘gold standard’ in the EEA for financial transaction oversight. Probably most importantly however is that the UK is a very competitive market and we wanted to prove ourselves in it - if we can make our business work in the UK, we can be assured that we have a business we can export to the rest of the world! What benefits can Betcade bring to operators and gamers?

David Chang: Because Google Play does not support real-money gaming in any way, we are providing an essential service to the gaming industry for Android devices. Android is the world’s most popular operating system, yet the Android support ecosystem for gaming operators today is virtually non-existent. Betcade solves the issues of app discovery, download management and payment, which delivers a viable new distribution channel for operators and gives consumers the easy app store experience which they are already accustomed to in every single other mobile content vertical. Could you tell us the reaction you have had from operators in recent months?

David Chang: Operator reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, from the time we announced what we were doing. In recent months, we’ve been working more closely with those operators who signed on to our Early Access Program. They’ve been looking at the early builds of the store and helping us fine tune the product both to create the best possible experience for players, and for operators to succeed on our store. Could you tell us more about how you plan to market the app ahead of its launch to the public, and any plans for rolling out to different markets?

David Chang: While we don’t want to give too much away before launch, we’ll be educating consumers on the benefits of Betcade, focusing heavily on performance marketing to drive downloads and installs, and most importantly letting consumers know about all the great games they can get on Betcade. We are focused on the UK market for now. Expansion will be in part directed by our operator partners. It’s our intention to open in the markets that are most important to them.
