The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is on the lookout for a new CEO, with Neil McArthur taking over from the departing Sarah Harrison on an interim basis.

Harrison is set to depart at the end of February after a little over two years, to take on a senior role in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Commenting on her work thus far and the Commission going forward, Harrison stated: “I am proud of the work that all at the Commission have delivered together. I am very confident that as the Commission delivers its new strategy it will go from strength to strength and will continue to make gambling in Britain fairer and safer.”

McArthur, chief counsel and executive director within the Commission, is to be appointed acting chief executive from February 28 until a new incumbent is found.

Bill Moyes, chairman of the Commission, added: “The Gambling Commission has set an ambitious agenda and clear priorities for treating customers fairly and making play safer, and our new three-year strategy embeds this approach for the future.

“Sarah’s impact has been significant in shaping this direction of travel. I and my Board colleagues wish Sarah every success for the future and look forward to continuing to work with her to deliver this agenda over the next few months.”

Following this news, it was announced that new requirements are to be introduced, making it easier for consumers to understand where exactly money raised from society lottery tickets go.

The changes are designed to improve transparency for players, and concern both society and local authority lottery operators, in addition to external lottery managers.

New rules to be introduced on April 8 state that lotteries have to be clear what charity or society proceeds will benefit, before players purchase a ticket.

In addition a report will have to be published, detailing what proportion of money raised, directly from lottery sales in the previous year, was used directly for the society.

Sarah Gardner, Commission Executive Director for Lotteries, said: “We want to make sure that consumers have as much information as possible to make informed choices about their gambling. In lotteries, we know that players are motivated by a range of things, particularly the chance to contribute to good causes, so it is only right that they understand what that means in practice.

“Our regulatory approach puts consumers right at the heart of everything that we do. This has been built on further in our new three-year strategy, where we say we will consider whether any further changes are necessary to ensure that society lotteries can continue to make important contributions to society, whilst being run in a way which is fair and safe for consumers.

“In particular, we have said it is important that information is available for consumers to help them to understand which good causes are being supported and how much of their money goes to the good cause.”

Totally Gaming says: Despite being in the role for a relatively short time, the impact Harrison has had has been far reaching and will continue to be felt after her departure. By improving society lottery transparency on the other hand, consumers will now have a clear indication of where and what exactly their ticket money is going to be benefitting.
