The lottery in Massachusetts has extended its instants product contract with Scientific Games for another year, pushing the pair’s collaboration closer to the 30-year mark.

The deal cements a relationship which has driven five straight years of record-breaking instant game sales.

Since 2010, instant game sales in the state have grown 19%. In the year to June 2015, the lottery generated $3.5bn in instant games revenues or just over 70% of total revenues of $5.01bn. Estimated sales in the 2016 financial year were expected at $5.23bn. Instant ticket sales broke $3.6bn or 69% of the total.

Executive director of the Massachusetts Lottery lauded the partnership between the lottery, Scientific Games and its network of retail partners. “Through this extension of our work with Scientific Games, we are moving forward with the Lottery's mission to grow retail sales and deliver funding to every city and town in the state,” he said.

John Schulz, senior vice-president for instant products at Scientific Games, said it was acknowledged that Massachusetts set the standard for instance games globally. “Many of the lottery industry's best practices have been created and fine-tuned through our work in Massachusetts,” he said.

Indeed, Scientific Games accounts for 76% of all instant games revenues in the US. It’s instant game revenue in the three months to June hit $150.9m, up 11% on the year previous period. The company said that UK instant games revenue performed best, up 17% with particular strength reflected in the retail sales growth at customers with participation contracts, as well as revenue from licensed games, multi-games and loyalty.

The company announced in the period that it had signed a seven-year instants contract extension with the Georgia Lottery. It also announced that it had won the contract to produce instant games for the Belgium National Lottery off a competitor. The one-year deal began in the first six months of 2016 and has an extension options of up to three-years.

Totally Gaming says: As can be ascertained by the percentage of US instant sales, Scientific Games rules the roost when it comes to instant lottery games in the US and much of the rest of the world. The next test will come from online and whether the company will be able to translate its dominance to digital instant win.
