Code aims to help lotteries avoid contributing to match-fixing attempts

The Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) has published its first code of conduct for members, designed to help uphold sporting integrity and ensure companies operate in a socially responsible manner.

The code calls on GLMS members to introduce processes to ensure minors are not targeted or exposed to their advertising, as well as having rigorous verification processes to ensure they cannot gamble.

The body, which monitors sports betting across state and national lottery operators, also sets out stringent controls for sports betting. Its members are advised to only offer odds on competitions that attract a certain level of interest among punters, though how this should be determined is left vague.

It calls on members to either sell or avoid acquiring stakes in sporting bodies, to avoid conflicts of interest.

Members are also advised to prohibit all staff from betting, unless given express permission, as well as ensuring controls are in place to stop employees from sharing sensitive betting-related information and strict penalties are set for corrupt or illegal activity.

“Competent and effective performance is critical to our success, but just as important is how we go about achieving results – with honesty , transparency and respect, without taking shortcuts, and by operating ethically and with integrity in all that we do,” GLMS president Ludovico Calvi said.

“The adoption of the present Code not only, once again, demonstrates that GLMS Members - Lotteries take their responsibility towards society in serious, but also proves the real commitment of the entire GLMS family to making zero compromises when it comes to the integrity of any step we take in our daily activity and operations.”
