Board now expected to turn attention to revising Veikkaus' organisational structure

Finland’s sole legal gaming operator Veikkaus has confirmed the appointment of a new executive team, with the company’s board of directors also looking to revise the structure of the company.

The new management team is now in place and has been brought in as part of a series of ongoing changes being made to the business following the merger of the Veikkaus, Fintoto and Raha-automaattiyhdistys (Ray) in January 2017.

"By revising our organization, we are preparing, for our part, for the changes in our operating environment, for the rapidly increasing international competition, and for success in digital business,” Veikkaus president and chief executive Olli Sarekoski explained.

Sarekoski will continue as chief executive, supported by chef operating officer Nora Vähävirta, who is responsible for the casino, lottery and betting business units, products and product development, marketing and branding, customer loyalty and digital channel sales.

Velipekka Nummikoski will serve as executive vice president, with control over communications, community and beneficiary relations and sponsorship agreements.

The trio are joined on the executive team by four senior vice presidents, including two new hires. Jari Heino has been brought in from Japanese technology giant Canon, where he served as European distribution director, as senior vice president of channels and sales. In this position Heino will be in charge of Veikkaus’ Pelaamo arcade chain, restaurant gaming tables, casinos, racetracks and Feel Vegas arcades, as well as its points of sale services and logistics.

The second new hire, Heli Lallukka, joined from furniture retailer Ikea in June to serve as senior vice president of human resources, a role which also covers human resource development, corporate planning and premises management.

They will work alongside senior vice president (SVP) of business operations Timo Kiiskinen; SVP of ICT and sales Ari Aarnihuta, and legal affairs and governance SVP Pekka IImivalta.

Following the publication of its results for the second quarter of 2018 last week, Veikkaus said it was going through a major transitional phase, with CEO Sarekoski warning of further changes. With the company’s new executive team in place the board is now turning its attention to a restructuring of the company.

However, Veikkaus added, this is not expected to lead to redundancies.
