Breaking down all the week's news into a set of easy-to-manage figures.

62 - The age of Churchill Downs VP of Racing Communications John Asher when he sadly died of a heart attack earlier this week. Asher had served as Churchill Downs racing communications lead since 1999, becoming one of the most recognisable figureheads of the Kentucky-based racing operator.

Issuing a personal statement Churchill Downs President Kevin Flanery President declared that ‘racing has lost one of its giants, with the passing John Asher’.

2 - The number of board members who have departed from Cherry AB with immediate effect. The Stockholm-listed online gambling group yesterday confirmed the departure of Anna Bergius and Claes Ruthberg as members of the Board of Directors with immediate effect.

Their decision to depart Cherry’s governance follows the Swedish Economic Crime Authority’s confirmation that both board members will be investigated in connection with ‘insider trading allegations’ charged against former Cherry CEO Anders Holmgren.

Both Bergius and Ruthberg have mutually decided to terminate their contracts with Cherry, acting in the best interest of the Stockholm enterprise and its current situation. The resignations see the firm reduce its current board to four active members.

3500m2 - The projected size of the events centre set to be added to Newcastle Racecourse, as part of a multi-million pound development scheme. Planning to submit its plans for the next stages of its development to Newcastle City Council in Autumn this year, it is hoped the proposals will boost the international prestige of the racecourse, in addition to creating a plethora of new jobs and driving a significant uplift of visitor numbers through the city.

David Williamson, Executive Director of Newcastle Racecourse, said “Our plans will complete the transformation of Newcastle Racecourse into a world class sporting venue. The development of the racecourse, and the wider High Gosforth Park Estate, will provide a significant boost to Newcastle’s local economy and help create a number of jobs.

“These plans will completely transform the customer experience here at Newcastle, with brand new facilities for racegoers including bars, restaurants and hospitality suites, alongside significant upgrades for owners and trainers as well as the accommodation for racing staff.”

€300,000 - The figure of the fine issued to Corona Ltd by De Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Netherlands gaming authority, for offering gaming to customers in the country without the required local licence.

Corona, a subsidiary of the Betsson group and operator of the Oranje and Kroon online casino brands, has detailed that it is currently locked in internal deliberations and assessments, as the group judges whether to appeal the decision.

This follows moves made by the lower house of the Dutch parliament two years ago, which saw the approval of the Remote Gaming Bill, that has thus far not had the approval of the country’s Senate.

€7.5 million - The fee paid by GIVEMESPORT owners Breaking Data Corp, for the strategic acquisition of Oryx Gaming.

Renaming the firm Bragg Gaming Group upon completion, ex-NetPlay TV Chief Financial Officer Akshay Kumar is set to be brought in to occupy a similar role, as Breaking Data plans to leverage sports news platform GIVEMESPORT’s loyal army of 26 million Facebook followers.

Joining Kumar is Dominic Mansour as Chief Executive, whose prior experience counts a similar role at the Health Lottery and Managing Director of FullTilt Poker.

He said of the deal: “The acquisition of Oryx is the first step on the road to the creation of a new global gaming group. We plan to follow this with other acquisitions in the gaming sector, as we position Bragg Gaming as a next generation gaming company.”
