Ahead of the Totally Gaming Summit, which takes place October 31-November 2, we spoke to Arno Nagelschmied, the Head of Guest Relations Department at Admiral Casinos & Entertainment (Novomatic Group) to discuss the importance of responsible gambling.

Why did you decide to speak at the Totally Gaming Summit?

The obvious reason is that the Totally Gaming Summit, and Clarion Events, have an excellent reputation, but second to that is when choosing where to speak on the topic of Responsible Gaming it is very important to have an interested and relevant audience – I know I will find this at the Summit.

How is your topic relevant to the gaming industry?

Firstly, and why I love to speak about Responsible Gaming, it is an extraordinarily important topic and one of the most misunderstood in our industry. It is also highly relevant to the industry because if you are not doing it properly, or doing it in a bad way, then the damage is enormous.

Why is it an important topic for a business to hear about?

Many operations currently don’t have a choice about implementing Responsible Gaming policies, and the major challenge is that if you are doing it because you have to, the chance is very high that you are not doing it properly. My session will provide another view on what can be done with Responsible Gaming and give people a new perspective on the topic, whilst showing them that it is by no means a bad thing to be taking on board.

What is it that drew you to responsible gaming, what experiences have you had which made you so enthusiastic about it?

My interest in Responsible Gaming dates back to when I started in the gaming industry in 1991. I was working as a receptionist and was in very close contact with my regular customers, some of whom it became clear were playing over their financial means. In that customer facing role I was able to see the financial and personal influence it was having on them, and if you are interested in your customers, and you like them, that is an uncomfortable and unsettling experience.

What made me very curious and enthusiastic about Responsible Gaming? I’ve been trained in many situations by experts of addiction and I never felt comfortable with the things they told me. When I did a management course, a Corporate Social Responsibility course in fact, that was the first time I had the impression CSR was a topic which fits totally to what has to be done within the area of Responsible Gaming. Fundamentally it is a question of social responsibilities, ethics, awareness, and of understanding what can go wrong if people are not properly using our products or our services.

The Totally Gaming Summit is a pan-european conference event which covers all of land-based gaming (casino & retail). The Summit is designed for operators and focuses on the latest gaming trends, new technologies, real world case studies, and cutting edge industry development.
