World Poker Tour targets Asian markets with Ourgame partnership

The World Poker Tour (WPT) has entered into a partnership with Chinese online games developer and offline operator Ourgame International as part of a move to expand its presence in the wider Asian market.

The deal will see Ourgame acquire rights to use the WPT logo and trademark on an exclusive basis in 14 countries across the continent.

The exclusive rights will cover Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Korea, Nepal, Macau, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. Ourgame has also acquired non-exclusive rights in Japan.

The agreement will include the introduction of WPT National and WPT Main Tour events with select live streamed final tables to Asia from 2015. In addition, those countries covered by the deal will gain access to WPT-branded free-play and social games.

The WPT and Ourgame will also join forces to develop WPT-branded merchandise and television production in Asia. Countries included under the rights deal will additionally gain access to various WPT television programmes.

WPT president Adam Pliska said the brand has been successful in expanding its footprint in the Asian market during recent years and is confident that this agreement will help boost its presence further.

“The WPT has worked hard to expand its footprint throughout Asian territories over the last few years with much success,” Pliska said. “A big part of this success was based on our strong working partnership with Ourgame, who established WPT National China at MGM Grand Sanya.

“Ourgame has proven to be exactly the sort of business ally we seek; a credible group of visionaries with incredible strategic leverage and a true commitment to the long-term growth of poker.

“By working with Ourgame to expand the WPT brand in Asia, we are assuring that the recent strong growth of the WPT in the region will continue for many years to come.”

Frank Ng, chief executive officer of Ourgame, was also optimistic about how the partnership will help WPT enhance its position in Asia: “The WPT is a true global leader in organising world-class poker events around the globe, and we share a common vision of promoting poker as a genuine mind sport.

“Over the past three years, we have worked together to not only establish WPT National China as one of the largest and most influential poker events in Asia, but also introduced world-class poker tournaments to the fast-expanding Chinese poker community.
