MGM GVC Interactive, the sports betting and interactive gaming joint venture agreed between MGM Resorts and GVC Holdings, has signed up California’s United Auburn Indian Community (UAIC) as its first Californian and tribal partner.

The agreement will see MGM and GVC provide their brands and proprietary technology to power retail and mobile sports betting at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort, as well as online casino and poker.

This is dependent on the relevant legislation being passed in California, and there are currently no bills close to being approved by the state legislature.

"It is not yet clear if California will authorise sports betting or interactive games generally, but with the overturn of PASPA possibly opening the door for sports betting, our tribe wants to be well-situated, and this agreement with the national leader in the field does just that," UAIC chairman Gene Whitehouse said.

The UAIC opened California’s Thunder Valley Casino Resort, a 275,000 square-feet facility located 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, in 2003. The venue was operated by Station Casinos until 2010, when UAIC decided to take charge of its own venue.

MGM president of interactive gaming Scott Butera said he was excited to have a partner of UAIC’s calibre become the joint venture’s first.

GVC director of corporate development and strategy Adam Greenblatt added that his company “greatly admired” the success of the Thunder Valley Casino, and looked forward to contributing to its future growth.

“The potential of this partnership is significant for MGM-GVC,” Greenblatt said.
