Twelve months of solid growth is now on the horizon for the Chinese SAR

Macau has rounded off the first half of 2017 with another strong performance, after reporting a 25.9% increase in gross gaming revenues (GGR) for June.

According to new data from the territory’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), casino revenues for Macau totalled $2.44 billion in June, compared with $1.94 billion in the prior-year period.

In the six months to June 30, 2017, accumulated GGR totalled $15.4 billion, up 17.2% on the first half of 2016.

The June figures mark the 11th consecutive month of gaming growth in Macau, which prior to August 2016 had experienced an uninterrupted series of monthly downturns for more than two years.

The 26-month tumble was triggered by Beijing’s anti-corruption drive and increased scrutiny over junket operators, who act as middlemen between the casinos and their VIP patrons.

At the end of the first quarter of 2017 there were 39 casinos in Macau run by six concession holders: 21 by Sociedade Jogos de Macau, six by Galaxy Casino, five by Venetian Macau, four by Melco Crown Jogos, two by Wynn Resorts and one by MGM Grand Paradise.

Totally Gaming says: With 12 months of solid growth now on the horizon, Macau’s casino operators – and those serving the market – might finally start to forget the prolonged period of declines that came before. However, while casinos on both sides of the Praia Grande have marked a strong push towards mass-market gamblers, analysts continue to express concerns surrounding the resurgence of VIP revenues – a segment in which strength goes hand in hand with volatility.
