The first of many? Bwin launches Manchester United casino app

Manchester United could become the first of many football clubs to have its own casino app following a launch by its online gaming and betting partner Bwin.

Bwin, which is also a partner of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Olympique Marseille, told that it will consider similar offerings after Bwin Manchester United Casino was unveiled this week.

The app, which comes three years into the partnership between the English Premier League club and the gaming operator, is set in a 3D casino environment, set against the backdrop of Old Trafford, the team’s home stadium.

Real-life likenesses and voice-overs of Manchester United players, including captain Wayne Rooney, welcome customers to the casino lobby and guide them through the game.

“We are certainly looking at rolling this out with other partners, but have nothing confirmed to announce at this point,” Jay Dossetter, Bwin’s head of media relations, told

However, the company was also keen to highlight its commitment to responsible gambling and dismiss the suggestion that links to major football clubs could attract under-age gamblers.

“As a responsible operator, we take our commitment to prevent under-age gambling extremely seriously,” Dossetter added. “The app can only be played by players 18 years and over in the UK who hold or set up a Bwin account.

“We have strict measures in place to verify players’ age and identity to prevent anyone under the age of 18 holding an account with us. Any marketing associated with this app will be targeted towards over-18s.”

Despite failing to qualify for this season’s Uefa Champions League and some consternation about the club’s direction since the departure of manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United remains a huge global brand.

While the casino app is only available in the UK, Bwin can reach out to the club’s 56 million Facebook friends and 200 official fan communities in 24 countries through a partnership that was signed in 2012.

Dossetter added: “Throughout the partnership we have consistently sort to deliver engaging and entertaining content to the fans. Our aim is to offer those fans unique gaming experiences anytime, anywhere.

“Working with the club, we have used our partnership to create something entirely new and stand out in our industry that will appeal to both Manchester United fans and casino players looking for superior graphics and game play.”
