The overall gambling industry worth was recorded at £13.9 billion.

Recently-released UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) statistics have identified a steady decline across the UK bingo sector since April 2008.

Turnover of all three segments of the sector - ‘Main Stage Bingo’, ‘Merchandises Bingo’ and ‘Prize Bingo’ - witnessed a continuous  decrease over the near ten-year recorded period, with the overall bingo turnover also falling from £1.43 billion to £1.05 billion.

Bingo’s gross gaming yield (GGY) fluctuated throughout the period, ultimately falling from £703 million in 2008 to £681 million in 2017.

It was a similar situation with the number of premises, although they did experience a modest increase of 8 during this time.

Elsewhere, the overall worth of the UK gambling market was recorded at a cool £13.9 billion in GGY (up from £8.4 billion in 2008), generated in the period between October 2016-September 2017.

Online gambling has also witnessed considerable expansion that occurred at a similarly stable rate since 2008, with online gross gambling yield rising from £2.5 billion in 2008 to £4.9 billion in 2017 to become the nation’s largest gambling sector.

Retail gambling also fared positively, but with the recent ban on fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs), the figures have been rendered largely out-of-date.

The data also suggests that gambling addiction has increased in tandem with the growth of the wider industry.

Totally Gaming says: The decline of British bingo is no secret, and the latest statistics published by the UK Gambling Commission have further reinforced this. The sector must come together in an attempt to stop the rot, or risk further casualties.
