SunBets, The Sun & betting on breaking news

SunBets announced the planned expansion of its team today as it plans its move into its new digs in the Shard in the new year. As a newcomer to the scene it has big ambitions, and a significant part of that plan coming to fruition is to leverage its relationship with journalistic sibling The Sun.

Speaking to, SunBets Head of PR Tim Reynolds said of this relationship: "Many people ask me exactly how our traders work with their journalist partners. The answer is incredibly well! Our sports traders love sport as much as The Sun's sports reporters, our novelty trading team are as mad about reality telly as any of their colleagues at Bizarre, and our politics trader is in awe of The Sun's political editor Tom Newton-Dunn! These shared passions give our business a brilliant platform from which to build- and offer our customers something quite unique: Truly instantaneous betting on breaking news."

Discussing the operator’s hunt for the best and brightest in the industry Reynolds stated: “We currently have a SunBets staff of over 100 in London, and are looking to bolster our numbers in our UK-based trading team. In the New Year we will be taking up our new offices in The Shard, and we want our new signings to help take us to the next level.”

He continued: “We want to hear from the most switched-on members of the gaming community who have their finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the bookmaking industry, politics, and breaking news.

“We work in an environment surrounded by journalists and social media executives eager to use our odds to enhance the quality of their content but crucially, we need people who can join our business from different areas of the gaming community and bring different skill sets to our team.”

The Sun, let’s not forget, remains Britain’s most loved newspaper in terms of daily circulation (1.78m printed as of January 2016) and with SunBets set to feature increasingly within its pages this is exceptionally valuable, not to mention free, marketing and development of brand awareness and offers.

One of SunBets’ aims is to be the market leader in novelty and entertainment markets, and it has strong ambitions for its politics section too. How quickly it can rival the established top tier bookies is up in the air but it’s safe to say there has not been a newcomer with its potential and reach for some time, if ever.

The world of mergers that it has entered into, with Ladbrokes Coral completing at long last this week for instance, will offer an enhanced challenge but one that SunBets evidently plans to overcome by cherry picking an expert team.

Totally Gaming says: With the backing of The Sun, which includes its readership both print and online, plus its connections via its editorial and content teams SunBets is undoubtedly well placed as a newcomer to rival the top tier bookmakers. As the company looks to expand its trading team, as well as other areas, it’ll be an attractive proposition for many in the industry and those toying with entering igaming.
