Star Sports has secured title sponsorship of the world’s most prestigious greyhound race, the English Greyhound Derby, which takes place at Towcester on 1 July.

The 2017 Star Sports Greyhound Derby will be run at the UK’s newest greyhound track for the first time, with a winner’s purse of £175,000 and total prize-money of over £350,000.

This means that the independent bookmaker, renowned for its fixed-odds telephone betting service, will be putting its name to the richest greyhound competition in the world. It will take the winner less than 29 seconds to complete the 500-metre course, which equates to more than £6,000 per second.

Luke Tarr, Head of Public Relations at Star Sports, told "It’s not only a privilege to sponsor the world’s premier greyhound race, but a thrill as well. The Star Sports brand has grown dramatically over the past ten years and this is another big step in cementing our position as the country’s leading independent bookmaker.

“We are renowned as the biggest layer in the ring at the race course and we are now looking to replicate this position at Towcester by accommodating some of the largest staking punters in the greyhound world too."

Kevin Ackerman, Chief Executive of Towcester Racecourse, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Star Sports as sponsors of the English Greyhound Derby. It was extremely important for us to find the right partner who share our ambitions for greyhound racing.”

Totally Gaming says: Star Sports is understandably delighted about securing sponsorship of the biggest race in the sport. They are also excited about working with Towcester Racecourse to deliver a top-class finals night, with the best greyhounds from the UK and Ireland doing battle in 14 races over various distances.
