John McCracken replaces Dr Jane Rigbye as Director of Commissioning

GambleAware has demonstrated its commitment to “best practice in commissioning effective treatment services” through the appointment of John McCracken.

McCracken has replaced Dr Jane Rigbye as Director of Commissioning (Treatment Services), who has been appointed GambleAware’s Director of Education, a newly-created role.

The role, which McCracken assumed on 3 April, will see him lead, develop and evaluate services within the context of a public health approach, including engagement with the NHS.

He was previously the Head of Drugs Policy at the Department of Health, where he was responsible for the treatment of dependence on drugs, and for working with other government departments to develop the range of services available to meet individuals’ needs for wider support.

McCracken’s earlier roles at the Department of Health included being Head of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. During two periods of secondment to the NHS, he was responsible for commissioning services for people with complex needs.

Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware, told TotallyGaming.com: “John is an experienced, tenacious and collaborative senior leader with a proven track-record of delivering successful needs assessment, service planning and outcomes reporting. His appointment demonstrates our commitment to best practice in commissioning effective treatment services.

"He brings an understanding of the importance of working with government and statutory agencies to develop and join up the range of services necessary to meet individuals’ needs for wider support. The role will involve leading, developing and evaluating services within the context of a public health approach, including engagement with the NHS and with primary care and social care.

"John’s immediate focus will be to deliver a commissioned, efficient system in partnership with the Gordon Moody Association, the National Problem Gambling Clinic, GamCare and its national network of treatment providers to ensure the maximum number of problem gamblers receive the correct level of intensity of treatment for their problem, and to promote best outcomes.”

Totally Gaming says: McCracken’s work in health-related positions clearly impressed GambleAware, who had sought out fresh expertise to implement a strategic aim to broaden public understanding of gambling-related harm as a public health issue, and to help those that develop problems to get the support and help that they need quickly and effectively.
