Jeremy Cooper was previously Chief Executive at the RSPCA.

It’s hoped that the appointment of Jeremy Cooper, an animal welfarist and former RSPCA Chief Executive, as Chairman of the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) will improve greyhound welfare and help ensure the board adheres to its 8-point welfare commitment. That’s the view of Clarissa Baldwin, the former Chief Executive of the Dog’s Trust and current Chair of the Greyhound Forum, a collection of animal welfare groups that work with the GBGB to improve greyhound welfare.

Baldwin told “How refreshing to see that an animal welfarist has been appointed as the new Chairman of the GBGB. Jeremy Cooper brings a broad spectrum of knowledge on animal welfare topics.

“This knowledge will be particularly significant and helpful to the GBGB as they start to fulfil their 8 point welfare commitment.  The members of the Forum look forward to working with Jeremy and the GBGB team in the months ahead.”

During Cooper’s time at the RSPCA, he devised and implemented a five-year strategic plan. Prior to that, he was responsible for overhauling the RSPCA Freedom Food brand and relaunching it as RSPCA Assured, while turning it into a profit-making business for the first time.

He said of his appointment: “I’m really excited to be joining the GBGB at this time and look forward to the implementation of the Greyhound Commitment. I can see that everyone at the GBGB is passionate about the sport and cares deeply about Greyhound welfare.”

GBGB Managing Director Mark Bird added: “Jeremy brings a unique skill set to the Board, with experience in animal welfare, governance and for his commercial acumen. I am very much looking forward to working with him.”

Earlier this month, Bird penned an open letter to Paul Darling, Chairman of the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) and Clive Hawkswood, leader of the Remote Gambling Association (RGA), urging the industry figureheads to support further funding measures for sustaining British greyhound racing.

Cooper’s appointment will commence from 2nd July 2018.

Totally Gaming says: Jeremy Cooper and the GBGB seem like an ideal fit. The former RSPCA Chief Exec has proven pedigree with regards to both animal welfare and turning profit, and the industry will be hoping he can transfer these skills over into the world of British greyhound racing.
