Deal sees MGM invest in The Alliance of American Football and become competition's official betting partner

MGM Resorts International has agreed to invest in The Alliance of American Football, a new professional football league set to launch in 2019, as well as striking a three-year deal to serve as the competition’s official sports betting sponsor.

The Alliance is a new American football competition founded by reality TV producer Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian, a member of the National Football League (NFL) Hall of Fame and former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers franchises.

Its inaugural competition will be played from February to April 2019, during the NFL off-season, with matches streamed live on a dedicated app that also offers an integrated fantasy product. Eight teams with 50-player rosters are set to compete in its 10-week regular season, followed by two playoff rounds and a championship game.

In states where sports betting is legal, it will offer real-money wagering, including in-play betting, via its app, using the platform owned and operated by MGM and its iGaming partner GVC interactive.

"We are excited to team with The Alliance on this unprecedented partnership, which allows us to fully engage with fans and revolutionize the fan experience," MGM Resorts chairman and chief executive Jim Murren said. "We look forward to expanding our customer base into this exciting new league and sports betting opportunity.”

The Alliance CEO and co-founder Ebersol said the new league has looked to bring in best-in-class partners to build a league capable of changing the professional sports landscape.

"We realised our overall mission and vision were in complete alignment with MGM,” he said. “As one of the world's largest and most successful gaming companies, and an industry leader in innovation, together we can revolutionise the sports wagering experience for fans in a way that's never been done before.

“I'm proud to welcome them to The Alliance as our first official corporate investor."
