He will replace the departing Ashley Highfield in November

William Hill have appointed Mark Brooker as the new Chair of their Corporate Responsibility Committee, and he will take up the role once current committee chair Ashley Highfield steps down on 16 November.

Brooker was the Chief Executive and Executive Director of Betfair, prior to becoming a corporate Non-Executive advisor for William Hill. He later became their Non-Executive Director. Highfield will depart the company’s board of governance.

Ciaran O’Brien, William Hill’s Communications Director, told “Mark's extensive industry and technology experience will be very beneficial as we further progress our corporate responsibility agenda."

The announcement came in the midst of Responsible Gambling Week, with Hills one of a number of big-name betting companies to give the initiative their full endorsement.

Most bookmakers opted to embrace the week through their social media networks, and William Hill chose to do so by creating a unique video with brand ambassador Robbie Savage.

Led by the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling (IGRG), Responsible Gambling Week has seen over 10,000 gambling venues and online sites and 121,000 employees take part in the biggest ever campaign of its type.

One of the primary aims of the campaign is to highlight the points of contact available to problem gamblers, such as staff working at gambling venues, information points around the country supported by GamCare and online chatrooms.

William Hill has long acknowledged the responsibility it has as a bookmaker, noting on their website: “Business is about more than just profits. It is also about our colleagues, our customers and our communities and making a difference in each of these areas.”

Hills have had a positive 2017 thus far, generating £837 million for the first six months of the year, and increasing revenue by 3% compared to the same period of last year.

Totally Gaming says: The announcement of Mark Brooker as William Hill’s new Chair of Corporate Responsibility Committee during Responsible Gambling Week could not be more timely. It is emblematic of their dedication to being a responsible bookmaker, and reinforces the work they have been doing alongside fellow betting companies to shine a light on these issues.
