ITV has received widespread plaudits for its racing coverage

ITV Racing was rewarded for its strong coverage of last year’s Grand National after it saw off tough competition to earn a BAFTA award at this sunday’s event.

The sports category was filled with worthy candidates, however ITV Racing rose to the top defeating the BBC for its coverage of the Six Nations, as well as Sky Sports for the Anthony Joshua bout with Wladimir Klitschko and Channel 4, for its production of the women’s European Championship semi-final between England and Holland, who were all also nominated in the sports category.

As prime sponsor of ITV Racing, William Hill’s Rupert Adams told “I am a massive fan of ITV racing and believe that the team has done a fantastic job. Clearly you cannot appeal to everyone and some aficionados do believe that it has been dubbed down too much. Personally I believe that die hard racing fans are catered for on the dedicated racing channels and most of the comments I hear have been positive.”

He added: “ITV Racing is still in its infancy and in my view will continue to improve and I for one could not be happier that their hard work has been rewarded with a BAFTA.”

There was also more good news for ITV Racing recently, as it was revealed that the viewing figures for this year’s race had increased to  8.5 million, up from the 8.2 million peak viewing figures from last year.

The channel’s lead racing presenter Ed Chamberlin expressed much jubilation after ITV Racing first received the nomination, giving credit to the team he works with: “I’m very lucky in that I am surrounded by so many brilliant people at ITV Racing, particularly those behind the scenes.

“I’d like to congratulate the people who have made this nomination possible, headed by Paul McNamara, one of sport’s top directors who has already won a Bafta.”

Totally Gaming says: ITV Racing is still young, however thus far it has shown all the signs of being a winner for UK racing fans. Given the wide scope of people that tune into the Grand National, for ITV Racing to be rewarded for its Grand National coverage is a major affirmation that the group is doing something right.
