Sports betting vertical boosted by FIFA World Cup and liberalisation of horse race betting

Denmark’s gambling market has reported an 11.5% increase in gross gaming revenue for the second quarter of the year, with the FIFA World Cup and the opening-up of betting on horse racing to all licensed operators, according to the country's gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden.

Revenue for the three month period ended August 31st was DKK1.63bn, with the sports betting vertical accounting for DKK648.1m of the total, a 24.1% year-on-year increase. Sports betting stakes were up 6.2% from the prior year at DKK6.0bn, driven by player interest in the FIFA World Cup.

The majority of revenue - 48.7% of the total - from fixed-odds betting came through mobile platforms, followed by 33.6% from land-based bookmakers, with the final 17.6% coming from desktop sites.

Online casino, meanwhile, saw GGR increase 17.4% year-on-year to DKK537.2m, with a fall in revenue from commission games - multiplayer casino titles such as poker and bingo - offset by growth in other products.

Slots accounted for 61.6% of total casino revenue in Q2, followed by single player roulette, with a 15.7% market share, and blackjack, which generated 11.7% of revenue.

The Danish gaming machines market was unable to match the performance of the sports betting and online casino vertical, reporting an 0.9% decline in GGR to DKK353.8m. The bulk of this (DKK272.8m) came from machines located in gaming arcades, with machines in restaurants accounting for DKK81m.

Land-based casinos, meanwhile, generated GGR of DKK91.5m for the period, down 4% year-on-year.
