Supporters are throwing their cash behind England.

The runup to England’s second round crunch tie with Colombia this evening is predicted to cause the biggest surge in online betting activity yet, according to Worldpay.

Figures from the payment processing company point towards a bumper start to the World Cup, with English fans giving the boys in white their full backing.

During the group stage, online betting activity soared by 50% ahead of England’s opening game with Tunisia, then decreased narrowly, by 2.9% for the second match against Panama due to less attractive odds. However, with England up five goals at halftime, betting activity soared just before the second half, with fans eager to predict the next goal scorer

As England took on Belgium in the final group game, online betting figures peaked in the exciting lead-up to the game, with less ‘in-play’ punting compared to Panama.

Gambling transactions increased by 7% on the day of the match, with transactions per second peaking an hour before kick-off, indicating that less ‘in-play’ betting took place compared to the previous match.

Commenting on the data, Daniel Belda, VP Growth of Digital Content & Gambling at Worldpay said: “It’s been a stellar start to the World Cup for England – Southgate’s boys may have lost their last group game to Belgium, but football fever is sweeping the country with the team through to the final 16.

“With every match potentially boosting betting by 50%, bookmakers will be hoping that England continue their winning streak, with July on track to be one of the busiest months of the year for online gambling. As England move forward to take on Colombia in the knock-out stage, punters will be on the edge of their seats for what is set to be a thrilling match.”

Totally Gaming says: There’s been a real buzz generated from English fans and pundits alike, after the Three Lions grabbed eight goals during an action-packed group stage. It’s therefore little surprise that tonight’s match is predicted to cause the biggest surge in betting, but time will tell whether this equates to a positive result on the pitch.
