Betting operators boosted by outsider's shock win in UK's biggest racing event

Bookmakers were celebrating the victory of outsider Rule The World in Saturday’s Grand National steeplechase at Aintree.

With more than 600 million believed to have watched the race around the world and around £200m (€249.4m/$283.1m) wagered in the UK, the victory of the 33-1 outsider – which was 50-1 earlier in the day – ahead of favourites such as Many Clouds and Shutthefrontdoor was positive news for betting operators.

Ladbrokes said it was the fifth year in a row that bookmakers “have been celebrating a terrific result” at Aintree, with only one of the leading contenders, The Last Samuri, even placed in the first five.

"It was the result of our dreams; a 33/1 winner gave us the kind of script we didn't dare hope for,” said David Williams, Ladbrokes’ director of media. “Punters have had a tough day.

"After the pain of the Cheltenham Festival we've had much the better of it at Aintree. We're leaving Merseyside feeling pretty pleased with how it's panned out. The heavens opened but God looked down favourably on the bookies.

“If we were greedy we'd have preferred to see The Last Samuri trail home out of the places but we can't grumble about a largely superb result.”

Meanwhile, statistics revealed by search engine Bing show that searches for horse racing and betting rose 600 times compared to the monthly average on the day of the Grand National.

In terms of brands, Bet365 led the way for desktop and mobile searches, with William Hill coming out on top for searches on tablet. The dominant age group searching for horse racing events and betting were 35-49 year-olds.

TotallyGaming says: Bookmakers were due a change in fortunes after the carnage they experienced at Cheltenham – when almost all the favourites galloped to victory. The amounts wagered on the Grand National again show the importance of horse racing to the betting industry.
