Twitter’s new products allowed BetStars to take its brand to the heart of the discussion

BetStars, the new online betting service from PokerStars, has announced that the Miracle of Medinah was voted as the favourite Ryder Cup moment, as part of its animated #GameChangers campaign.

Building up to, and during, the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota, BetStars asked its 11,000 followers on Twitter to vote for the most memorable moment of recent tournaments. This followed on from the successful animated campaign for Euro 2016, which was heralded by Twitter as one of their ‘creative wins’ for June, and reached a total of 2.8 million users.

71% of the vote went to the Miracle of Medinah, beating off competition from five other iconic moments including Seve’s win as captain in 1997, Bernhard Langer’s missed putt to retain the Ryder Cup in 1991, and Justin Leonard’s ‘tram-liner’ which settled the Battle of Brookline in 1999.

By comparison, the 2016 cup was settled in some-what subdued fashion, as Ryan Moore two-putted the 18th to beat Lee Westwood 1 up, and secure victory for the United States with three matches still to finish. The final score of 17 points to 11 was reflective of the US dominance right through the week.

Paul Townley, BetStars Social Media Manager, told “The Ryder Cup GameChangers campaign was a great success for us. Mixing the incredible sporting theatre of the Ryder Cup with Twitter’s innovative new products allowed BetStars take our brand to the heart of the discussion on social media. Few events can match the Ryder Cup for drama and we were delighted to be able to position BetStars at the centre of that conversation.

“We knew when the Miracle of Medinah was voted the biggest GameChangers moment that the European fans were still believing they had a chance on the final day. But hats off to Patrick Reed and his teammates for holding their nerve and putting on a great show. Bring on France in 2018!”

Totally Gaming says: BetStars has found an effective way of extending its Twitter reach during high profile sporting tournaments with animated campaigns such as #GameChangers. The 2016 Ryder Cup may have been missing that iconic moment as Europe faded to a heavy defeat, but BetStars was still able to engage its followers by looking back at memorable moments from years gone by.
