Isabelle Andres said Betclic is full of "ambition" as a pioneer in the Portuguese market

Betclic said its “strong reputation” can help it achieve success in Portugal after it became the first operator to receive an online sports betting licence in the country.

Portuguese citizens can now bet online legally for the first time after the company’s new website launched this week.

The development comes just over a year after the country approved its new online gambling framework. The Remote Gambling Association (RGA) at the time argued that high tax rates would prevent legal operators from making money in Portugal.

“We are delighted to be operating in Portugal, a country where we have a strong reputation,” said Isabelle Andres, chief executive of Betclic Everest Group. “As the leader of online sports betting in France, we approach this market with determination and ambition.

“With this opening of a regulated market, we are determined to settle within the leading operators in Portugal. Our launch will be supported by the dynamics of Euro in France.”

While online gaming is still in its infancy in Portugal, the country’s casino industry grew by eight per cent in 2015, following a 37-per-cent decline in the previous six years. says: “Launching just in time for Euro 2016, where Portugal will be led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Betclic will hope to take full advantage of their position as the country’s sole legal online betting operator.”
