The country's football federation punished 17 coaches and players

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) has hailed the role played by Sportradar Security Services in uncovering a match-fixing ring.

The FRF imposed bans of between two years and two months on three coaches and 14 players at second division Gloria Buzau over match-fixing allegations.

Coach Viorel Ion and assistants Marian Rosu and Romeo Bunica have been suspended from taking part in football-related activities for two years. They were also fined 200,000 lei (€44,000/$49,000) each, the FRF's disciplinary committee said in a statement.

The FRF said Sportradar – which is a partner of Uefa and Romanian Professional Football League - was among the groups that helped it identify the wrongdoing.

“We sincerely hope this decision at first instance and the sanctions that have been imposed show our commitment to the integrity of football in our country,” said Costin Negraru, the RFF’s integrity manager. “At this point, we would like to thank Uefa and Sportradar for their information, insights and support. Their joint efforts were crucial in building our case, confirming our concerns and providing testimony.”

Media reports of match-fixing and corruption have been rife in Romania for years with low-paid players being targeted in leagues across the country. Marius Sumudica, coach of Romanian champions Astra, will serve a two-month ban at the start of next season for placing bets on domestic and international matches.

Andreas Krannich, managing director of Sportradar Security Services, said: “Our reports and expert testimony proved pivotal in securing the sanctions that included a range of bans and fines. We remain committed to supporting any and all cases brought by our partner Uefa or any of their member associations.”

TotallyGaming.com says: “This story again shows how the betting sector has a vital role to play in helping stakeholders to uncover match-fixing.”
