Result of a Gambling Commission and Lancashire Police joint operation

A joint operation between the Gambling Commission and Lancashire Police has resulted in a gaming machine coin thief being jailed for a total of 20 months.

Nick Evans, senior press officer for Lancashire Police, told TotallyGaming.com: “The defendant’s name was Ian Sparkes. We were pleased to work with the Gambling Commission and are grateful for their support and co-operation in this case, which was a great example of [a] partnership working.

“We rely on partners to effectively tackle criminality and we look forward to continuing our joint working in the future.”

Sparkes had used a plethora of tools and equipment to steal in excess of £14,000 from a number of pubs and clubs up and down the country.

The joint investigation used a variety of sources of evidence, such as CCTV, to identify the offender, which ultimately led to his capture and jailing.

Helen Venn, programme director for compliance at the Gambling Commission said: “Here is another excellent example of how multi-agency partnerships can deliver results, and help keep crime out of gambling.

“The team working on this joint operation worked quickly and effectively, using the evidence and intelligence available to identify the offender, and reduce the impact this had on both the gaming machine suppliers, the alcohol licensed premises and the public.”

Totally Gaming says: Joint operations can be critical when it comes to tackling crime, and this is a prime example. Through the pooling of resources processes are undoubtedly sped along, ensuring that dangerous people, such as Sparkes, who has undoubtedly terrorised many during his crime spree are taken off the streets.
