Why Smarkets is one of Inc's fastest growing companies

The company placed 12th in the Inc. 5000 Europe for 2017

Smarkets recently placed 12th in Inc’s list of fastest growing companies in Europe. From 2012 to 2015 it grew an incredible 3,109% and its team is now 80 strong with more hires incoming.

The London HQ is located in a modern office overlooking St. Katharine Docks on one side and Tower Bridge on another. With a well publicised, progressive and fascinatingly ‘modern’ company culture which includes salary transparency, set-your-own salary and no cap on holiday time, this suggests one obvious headline. Employee morale matters, and the result is both productivity and business success.

Discussing the Inc 5000 listing, Smarkets Press Officer Pascal Lemesre told Totally Gaming: “I think we’re one of the most profitable companies per employee in Europe. Hiring good people is vital, but so is trust. The guiding principle is self-management“.

“We do a lot of other things to make it a great place to work. We’ve three chefs working for us full time; breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided and the gong goes at lunchtime to ensure we all eat together every day.

The company, which Lemesre notes is a technology company first and foremost, has recently opened a new office in Santa Monica, near to Snapchat in Los Angeles. The reason they’ve headed out to LA? This is where the biggest and best pool of software engineers reside. CEO Jason Trost is now based out on the West Coast predominantly as he looks to recruit the best of these for his long term Smarkets project. His goal reaches beyond betting, and whilst the aim of Smarkets is to provide the best and fairest betting exchange, the underlying aim is to create a tier one technology company.

Data is at the heart of everything Smarkets does, and the company focuses on a data driven marketing approach too. We’re yet to see a well known brand ambassador on our screens suggesting we try out Smarkets, as the company wants the quality of the product to speak for itself via word of mouth. It’s a company which is particularly proud of the fact that all its products are built in-house.

Its most attention grabbing form of marketing so far has been the QPR sponsorship. Lemesre explained this has been more for validity, and he added “it has been great going to the stadium and seeing our logo everywhere and we’ve had lots of interest in the 0% commission offer on QPR games”. Down the line though Smarkets wants to pursue the high volume traders more than it does your run of the mill football punter.

Totally Gaming says: With a new Santa Monica office, a product built in-house which is both stylish and easy to use, and the numbers for 2016 expected to be pretty healthy when they’re revealed in the next coming weeks, Smarkets is leading by example. New betting operators continue to crop up, but few do things differently. With Smarkets’ success now well documented the hope is that less go down the same habitual route and more try to break the mould in a similar fashion.
