Sportingbet owner GVC admitted that figures were down in Greece earlier this year

Sportingbet has attempted to revitalise its Greek operations by becoming the official national betting sponsor of Euroleague Basketball in the country.

Sportingbet will be the regional partner of the signature Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Game of the Week and the Eurocup Finals.

The company’s Ioannis Capodistrias said that GVC Holdings-owned Sportingbet - which in July reported a fall in player activity in Greece as the country was shutting banks to limit strains on its crippled financial system - hopes to benefit from its connection with one of Greece’s most popular sports.

“It is our honour to be the national sponsors of Turkish Airlines Euroleague, the ultimate European basketball institution, a competition at the highest level with which we share common values,” said Capodistrias, who is vice-chairman of Centric Multimedia, which operates Sportingbet along with GVC in Greece.

“Sportingbet is distinguished by characteristics like drive, energy to achieve targets and passion for sports elements that are also dominant within Turkish Airlines Euroleague.

“I am certain that through this agreement, both parties will enjoy great returns.”

Jose Luis Rosa-Medina, Euroleague Basketball’s director of global marketing partnerships, said: “Signing with a solid sector leader like Sportingbet allows Euroleague Basketball to strengthen its already-strong brand in Greece.”

In July, Sportingbet owner GVC said that it was “too early to forecast whether [cash restrictions] will have a material effect on the second half of the financial year for our Greek operations”.

There was no further mention of Greece as GVC last week gave a trading update for the nine months to September 30. It said that net gaming revenue was up 11 per cent year-on-year, and added that it expects to complete its purchase of Bwin.party “in early 2016”.
