PokerStars has received a Spanish sportsbook license

PokerStars has continued a busy few weeks after acquiring a provisional licence to begin offering internet sports betting and slots games in Spain.

The Amaya-owned online gaming brand last week announced that its sportsbook had gone live in the UK, and will now add to its online poker and casino offering in the Spanish market after being awarded new licenses by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) regulator.

This week Canada-based Amaya also began trading on the renowned Nasdaq stock exchange in New York City.

“We’re very pleased to receive provisional licenses to expand our games offering on PokerStars in Spain,” said Gino Appiotti, president of Southern European operations for PokerStars.

“Our operation of online poker, live poker and now online casino shows that players trust us to deliver a variety of games in a fun and exciting way. We look forward to building on this by launching games under these new licences.”

The UK sportsbook, which began its beta phase in March, is accessible from the PokerStars 7 client, and currently accepts bets on football, tennis, basketball, ice hockey, rugby union, handball and volleyball.

Parent company Amaya said in its annual report in April that the rollout of the PokerStars web and mobile sports book should be completed by the end of 2015 and that it believed diversification from poker was essential for future growth.

David Baazov, chief executive of Amaya, said: “We believe about 40-50 per cent of our active players have casino or sportsbook accounts on competing platforms.

“As we estimate poker captures more screen time than competing verticals, we feel there is a value add to providing these players with the ability to play the games they already enjoy playing elsewhere but through one platform, a single account and common valet and the same trusted customer service fun protection, game integrity and payment processing capabilities they have come to expect from PokerStars.”
