NRL and Sportsbet make responsible gambling commitment

The NRL's Andrew Abdo said Sportsbet would fund a responsible gambling programme

Sportsbet will fund a responsible gambling programme as part of its obligations as the National Rugby League's (NRL) official wagering partner in a new deal that will until 2020.

Sportsbet, the Paddy Power Betfair subsidiary, fought off competition from Crownbet to sign the Aus$60m (€38.7m/$43.7m) deal, which is the most lucrative wagering sponsorship in Australian sport.

The NRL’s head of commercial, Andrew Abdo, said that the renewal includes a range of conditions around advertising and marketing, responsible gambling and data and privacy protocols.

"One of the crucial factors in this agreement is that there will be controls in place to restrict the promotion of wagering, especially to minors, and Sportsbet will fund and implement a market-leading responsible gambling programme," said Abdo.

The agreement gives Sportsbet the inside running on advertising across the NRL’s broadcast partners, including the Nine Network, Fox Sports and radio stations. Some of the marketing requirements relating to the deal are outlined in a new Australia Association of National Advertisers wagering advertising code that is due to come into effect in July, but was dismissed by Tabcorp recently. The code stipulates gambling ads cannot target minors, show people placing a bet while drinking or link gambling with "sexual success or enhanced attractiveness".

The agreement was announced just days after Federal Minister Alan Tudge said that he believes governing bodies and teams must consider whether close relationships with wagering companies is in the best interests of their sports.

TotallyGaming.com says: “The NRL is a major focus for sports betting in Australia, with rugby league and Australian rules football accounting for about 50 per cent of wagers. Sportsbet has paid a big sum to extend its partnership with the league, but the exposure can help to cement its place as a market leader.”
