Rep Jason Chaffetz wants to prevent states from allowing online gambling

New Jersey’s operators raked in the state’s highest-ever online gaming win in November, according to figures released by the Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE).

The amount that companies gained from customers stood at $13.2m (€12.0m) in November, which was a 51.3 per cent increase on the same month in 2014. The previous highest revenue, $13.16m, was recorded in March 2015.

The biggest winner among operators was Caesars Interactive, which saw a 147.4 per cent year-on-year increase in win to $2.7m, while Borgata remains the market leader in New Jersey, with win of $4.1m, which was up 22.1 per cent.

The figure contributed to a total of $134.8m in gaming win for the year to date, which is 20.2 per cent higher than the first 11 months of 2014.

Casino win for the month was $191.1m, down 1.4 per cent compared to $193.8m in November 2014, and comes as plans were revealed for a public vote in November 2016 on expansion outside of Atlantic City.

Total gaming win, which includes land-based on online operators, was down 0.9 per cent in November to $204.3m. The total win for 2015 to date is $2.37bn, down 7.1 per cent compared to 2014.

Meanwhile, proposed federal legislation that would ban online gambling in New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware has been presented for a second time.

The bill's main sponsor, Rep Jason Chaffetz, said that he was concerned that residents of states that outlaw gambling, either in casinos or online, would be able to play anyway. The bill would reverse a 2011 Justice Department ruling that gave states the right to offer internet gambling to their residents.

"It's naive at best to think you can put a wall on the Internet," said Chaffetz, who is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which conducted the hearing.
