Loto-Québec has regulated and allowed esports betting in the region

Esports betting in Québec is now both legal and regulated thanks to Loto-Québec.

Loto-Québec spokesperson Patrice Lavoie told TotallyGaming.com: “With the increasing popularity of esports, there is more and more demand for opportunities to bet on this type of competition. With Mise-o-jeu, Loto-Québec is offering the first legal, honest and secure gaming environment for placing bets on esports in Québec.

“With that in mind, Loto-Québec was pleased to take advantage of the DreamHack Montréal event to launch this new product. It’s still too early to assess the success of esports betting, but we are quite happy with results so far. This new offering was well-received at DreamHack, where it drew lots of attention. Bet offerings will be available for other international calibre competitions where professional players are featured.”

The first bets were taken on the recent Starcraft II World Championship series. Loto-Québec were also involved at the Dreamhack Montréal tournament that Lavoie mentions, the organisation sponsored the ‘Indie Zone’ at which numerous Québec game developers were present.

Louis Beaudet, director of esports and entertainment betting at Loto-Québec, added: “With the increasing popularity of esports, there is more and more demand for opportunities to bet on this type of competition. With Mise‑o‑jeu, Loto‑Québec is filling the gap by offering a secure and honest environment for placing bets.”

Totally Gaming says: Ever more regions and betting operators are waking up and realising that numerous esports games look set to be sizeable markets in the near future if executed properly. Loto-Québec is getting in at the right time.
