FanDuel and DraftKings have announced plans for e-sports offerings

FanDuel and DraftKings have each expanded their fantasy sports operations by announcing plans to launch e-sports games.

FanDuel has bought e-sports fantasy platform AlphaDraft, while rival DraftKings has announced it will begin competitions related to the League of Legends World Championship in October and has signed partnerships with six leading e-sports organisations.

The move adds to the companies’ focus on major US sports, while DraftKings also offers games related to NASCAR, golf and mixed martial arts (MMA).

US market leader said that FanDuel it will bring AlphaDraft’s employee base in-house to help create a “one-of-its-kind” daily fantasy product specifically for e-sports.

“With over 200 million people globally watching e-sports, AlphaDraft gives those fans a way to engage with this burgeoning entertainment product that creates an enormous opportunity for us,” said Nigel Eccles, chief executive and co-founder of FanDuel.

“This is sports for a new demographic, with very little crossover with what are considered traditional sports fans, and this acquisition gives us the ability to leverage the expertise of AlphaDraft’s team, while helping their efforts in customer acquisition and building awareness of this new industry.”

DraftKings will begin offering fantasy e-sports contests on October 1 and has signed partnerships with major teams Cloud 9, TSM, CLG, SK Gaming, compLexity Gaming and Mousesports.

Matt Kalish, co-founder and chief revenue officer of DraftKings, said: “e-sports is one of the world’s most popular spectator sports, and we are excited to introduce League of Legends to our industry-leading fantasy platform as a way to bring fans worldwide closer to the game.

“Our partnerships show our strong commitment to the e-sports space, and our desire to work with top teams and players to support and help grow this booming space.”
