DraftKings expands portfolio as major league teams open up to fantasy sports

The NBA basketball league’s Minnesota Timberwolves has become the latest major league property to link up with DraftKings, with the US fantasy sports operator having told TotallyGaming.com that its continued growth illustrates sports fans’ increasing appetite for daily engagement.

Minnesota is the fourth NBA team to strike a deal with DraftKings, following the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics, while the fantasy sports operator also has arrangements with NFL American football teams the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, and the NHL ice hockey league.

“Professional sports have become more social, allowing fans to engage with the teams and players they are passionate about,” Femi Wasserman, Draftkings’ vice-president of communications, told TotallyGaming.com.

“Many NBA, NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball teams have recognised that fans in the stadium are participating in fantasy sports and have partnered with us to provide them with the most up-to-date information.

“It’s a tremendous, mutually-beneficial opportunity for teams to enhance the in-game experience for fans while introducing daily fantasy sports and DraftKings to them.”

The deal between DraftKings and the Timberwolves was unveiled just hours after David Stern, the former commissioner of the NBA, spoke out in favour of federal regulation of sports betting in the US, as reported earlier today (Thursday) by TotallyGaming.com.

Under the deal with Minnesota, DraftKings will activate a range of social media promotions in partnership with the franchise.

DraftKings will also become a presenting sponsor of the franchise’s TimberWolves Team Stats social media feature and the WolvesCast podcasts and will host ‘Live Like a King’ fan sweepstakes that will give supporters the chance to win special prizes.

“Fantasy sports gaming is a huge and rapidly growing industry and is something that many of our fans are interested and engaged in,” Timberwolves senior vice-president and chief revenue officer Ryan Tanke said.

“This partnership and industry category opens up some great new opportunities to further connect and engage with our fans.”
