Betfair to continue in New Jersey through Golden Nugget partnership

Betfair is to continue its online gaming operations in New Jersey through an agreement with the Golden Nugget Casino, a land-based facility in Atlantic City.

According to a number of media reports, the Golden Nugget will become the online gambling company’s third partner in New Jersey since the state legalised online gaming in November 2013.

New Jersey law states that any operator wishing to offer online gaming services in the state must have a link to a land-based casino. Betfair’s deal with its original partner, Trump Plaza, ended in September following the closure of the land-based operation.

Betfair was given time to find a new partner rather than simply close its New Jersey operation, and struck an agreement with Caesars Entertainment, which allowed it to continue to operate its New Jersey-facing BetfairCasino.com website.

Now Betfair has found a new land-based partner in Golden Nugget, which is owned by Landry's and operated by Caesars Entertainment. Golden Nugget and Betfair will offer two online casinos in the form of GoldenNuggetCasino.com as well as the BetfairCasino.com site.

Don Ryan, senior vice-president of gaming of the operator’s Betfair US division, said: “We are very excited to move our operations to Golden Nugget Atlantic City, one of the premier resort destinations in New Jersey. With this relationship, Betfair and Golden Nugget are well positioned to accelerate growth in 2015 and beyond.”

The news comes at a time when Betfair has experienced significant growth in the state. Despite revenue having dropped in the state’s wider online gaming industry, Betfair was the only operator in New Jersey to record an increase in revenue in October.

According to figures from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the combined BetfairCasino.com and GoldenNuggetCasino.com websites will enjoy a market share of around 25 per cent.
